I got an e-mail from the barrista/office admin job, so I'll give 'em a call tomorrow morning and set up my interview appointment. The first one was phone-based, so this is basically my second/in-person one. As long as I do well, things are promising. I'd really like this position, since it looks like a real, honest living wage, which is something that I'd punt a baby to get. Anyhow.
I put together the Gristlegrinder that'd been floating around in my head for a while, and have no idea if I plan on using him or not. A character really sort of came together for him, and a combination of Merits and Skills really set him up for me mechanically. Contracts were straight-forward. Stone 3, Fleeting Court or Hearth 2. Hearth for general purpose, Fleeting for Glamor. I did a mechanical experiment for Wintermute the Manikin, but I tend to keep in mind that Artifice is really not a high priority for that character, and remembered seeing a Metal or Steelskin thing somewhere, even though I'm not really sure. In any case, Artifice is kind of in character, so I'm not sweating that.
Truth is Wintermute is a 'broken' character compared to the more attempt-at-self-realization kind of guy the red cap I was thinking of. The Manikin is a device who'd rediscover parts of its humanity. The red cap is someone who'd be running away from it at the start. So. But I think it'd work. The shut-in? Honestly, I stopped trying. That was never really fully realized and I just want to play other concepts way more.
Outlining some more Mage stuff today just because it was a slow day. How hard to other people work on one-shots? I really don't know. I did a short list of bios for characters that were referenced in my prep material. So far there are eight people, without the lists of some of the 1917 murder victims, abyssal spirits, and the original architect of the house. This is stuff that'd never be found out by players without severe tangents. I think I'll hand out the info like DVDs have extras. Want to know who that hanging spirit was? Well, now you know! Really, I'm just doing this shit for fun now, though. Brent and Frank already gave my prep write a thumbs up, so I'm not as gun shy as I was. The new stuff is a lot better, so the old stuff might actually go through a re-write process. I'm such a nerd. ^_^;

.... I want to like you, but if you keep this up, we'll never be friends. I want you to know that. I keep trying, it's just...these Contracts. They're destroying this relationship.
Ok, first of all, it's cold up here. I kind of want that to sink in, because I'm pretty sure it's roasting in the midwest right now. I don't really have much trouble with heat, but I don't miss temperatures so hot it just makes you want to sit around until evening. Brent and Val have this mini-AC unit which they hardly ever have to turn on, but even when they do, they turn it on for temperatures that we'd of just opened up the windows and turned the fan on for my Dad's house. So that's something.
Over here, besides looking for gainful employment and maybe combing Craigslist for roomies or something*, I've been combining my notes and working on gaming stuff. I spent about an hour looking into ghost rules for NWoD and finding them pretty good. I doubt we'll ever see a Wraith expansion for NWoD, but I'll try to deal.** I also spent, like, four fucking hours with the Changeling books again trying to puzzle out the mechanics to embody my character concepts for the Cam with Brent.
My disinterest for Contracts has found itself transformed into outright ire. What's up with that? One - I don't like their format. They're a bunch of individual paths, none of which simply scale up in scope, but offer a multitude of different abilities at scaling xp costs. So, if the only power I want is ***, then I have to buy * and ** before I can get it, nevermind that those are likely to actually be useless to me if I don't have the relevant Skill. The answer is to buy that skill up, but if it doesn't make a lot of sense to the concept, something's got to give. And either way, it kind of creates a cascading xp requirement that I like on one hand but the inefficiency of it I dislike on the other.
In addition, many contracts are a two-dicepool where one of those pools is Wyrd. Wyrd is just one pool because it goes up to ten, but it's the power stat, so it's hands down the most expensive ability on the list. Because you're not rolling dice, you're really forced to buy it up high if you want certain abilities to get past one success, which I feel is a real issue. OTOH, once it's up there, someone with a high Wyrd is really versitile in terms on Contracts, but it really favors high XP characters more then usual. At least in Mage, a focused younger Mage who picks his Rotes well is still going to be able to compete (or aid) the big boys with high Gnosis. So, that's thematic, it can go either way, I guess. You can either be mostly mundane and rely more on your skills and low-impact Contracts (Hearth is great for this) or just up your Wyrd and go batshit.
Still, if you don't have the XP to buy Contracts and Wyrd, you're looking at a prolonged period of time where you don't really actually do anything. Have fun being scenery again.
In addition, I was considering that I might not have the XP chops to pull off my first, favored character concept, so I decided to go with something low-key. Kind of an agrophobe who came out fairly rarely (which would explain if I didn't come to game often) who didn't need to be that powerful, but was a bit of an information broker and blackmarketeer who assisted his private eye partner. Autumn Court gets a neat Mantle that adds dice to Occult pulls/rolls revolving around Contracts. I don't like many of the Contracts, actually (I chalk this up to being a gaming curmudgeon a bit and decided to just roll with it), and figured I'd just take what I was given and look through the book to find out what Contracts had a fair number of Occult in the die pools.
Good God. Almost friggin' none. I need Summer 4 to get some, or 5's in the other seasonal courts. The only one that's going to apply to me, at least at first, is Autumn, which means I can summon a hailstorm. Which is neither in character nor of any goddamn interest to me at all. I had to have Brent look into the Summer Court book to find alternate Seasonal court Contracts before I found something thematic and Occult related in their Autumn alt.
Summer isn't vetted for play yet. OK. Great. So, I'm basically just going Fleeting Autumn 3, Hearth 2, Mantle 4, and just buying skills and merits, it looks like, on this one guys. What are the rules for mortal thaumaturgy in Changeling, because that's what I want.
Actually, here's what I'd of wanted over their power setup. Exalted style charmlists where the powers are tied to a concept and have pre-requisites but are paid for modularly because they're often unrelated. Problem - high XP characters are just going to buy record numbers of modular charms because they don't scale in XP. Not a problem in Exalted. Might be a problem in Cam Changeling because XP totals are so amazingly high.
Suggestion 2: Use Vampire magics as a template. Buy the Contract stat up from 1-5, but have powers purchased seperate, rated from 1-5, giving one power of the appropriate level to the character every time they increase the rank of their contract, but allow additional thematic powers to be purchased for a modular cost. This is my favorite suggestion because every time you want to come up with a new goddamn power, you don't have to make up four more just to justify creating a new contract, and you wouldn't feel obligated to add a whole new Contract list in every published splat. OTOH, it's a limited run that's already way, way past production, so it's not like these suggestions are useful now. They're just where I would have taken it. I just think this is, by far, the more elegant way to go. It also stops characters from having a bunch of grab-bag Contracts. You've just got the Corebook, plus a few others, so you can give the nod or stop seperate powers from being allowed into the Cam as they're released instead of having to ok or axe a whole Contract list.
Also, there arn't a lot of ass-beating Contracts. I guess this is on purpose, but I'd of liked a few more obviously helpful contracts for combat. I keep seeing all these, "Let's beat the Gentry's ass if they show back up again." in the books, but shit. They're better off just paying Mages or Vampires to do their ass-beating for them. Changeling gonna get his ass kicked.
*If you want to move up, now's a good time. I'm housetrained and I like doing laundry and dishes. ** Probably no Kindred of the East expansion either. That was a cultural artifact of when it appeared, no doubt.

I love laundry day. I'm not even kidding. I'm supposed to be scheduled pretty soon for a few interviews, and the Borders interview is tomorrow, so I figured I'd clean all my clothing and stuff and just do some stuff I'd been thinking about. First of all, I'm trying to do my Changeling writeup, which is harder then I'd like. I've wanted to do Wintermute for a long time and to be honest, I might be able to just write up a character for it, but Brent never used is private eye concept, so I said I'd put some work into my agoraphobic occultist/technologist. And you know, I like Changeling, but it's missing something for me, and I think it's located in the Contracts department. I've got some really minor quibbles about kiths and shit, but Contracts just don't seem to do it for me.
Plus, I keep seeing this reference into Autumn Court occultists, but they don't really seem to be more magicky then any of the other groups, so. Anyhow.
I'm starting to look for an apartment, and I'm interested in living in Seattle as opposed to the outlying cities like Redmond or someplace like Issaquah. These places, there's nothing wrong with them. But I did want to move to Seattle, so. Only one of the jobs I'm applying for right now can make that happen though, and even though it looks promising, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'd like something like 24k, because that fits my estimates of what I'll need better then anything else. No matter what the case is, though, I'm probably looking at a studio apartment unless I can get a roommate.

I wrote some fiction to serve as an introduction to my one-or-two shot Mage game. I've been wanting to Storytell/DM for kind of a while now, and since Exalted is dragging a little bit, I decided to let us get our fix by running a game for between one and three people. It's a little long. Comments and suggestions welcome. Fiction below the cut.

Already told Vi some of the good news, just that I've been invited to interview for the barista/administrator position in Seattle. I think I'll e-mail them tomorrow morning and ask if Thursday is ok. Tuesday is a job fair, and Wednesday I'll be taking the bus into the city to get a good idea of what I'm looking for. I intended to see if someone nearby wanted to come along, but everyone's going to be working, so I'll plan to have the day to myself.
Hm.
I've been writing some lately, but it's all come out garbled. Practiced on a few poems to get more used to an artistic frame of mind. The post on politics was prep for writing articles. Article writing is an issues because I recently signed up with a program that supposes I blog for money, generated be ads people click on. Kind of dubious. Unlikely to produce anything. It was free, and I was curious, so. I'll let you know when my first entry is up. Maybe you'll help me.
Staying up laying out conceptual work for a Mage game. Awakened is neat, but I want to try my hand at it. Some practice before the Exalted game, if it ever friggin' happens. Maybe, maybe.
Feeling a little melancholy lately.

(tiny work thing) I had a good day today. Played with rats, hung out with Frank and Lisa until I had to go into work. Early into the evening, the sky clouded over and a light drizzle precipitated. I enjoyed it - I didn't imagine that the pleasent light rain I enjoyed indicated that multple counties had been totally knocked out of power again. So I've been busy. It's been a pretty non-typical night with a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes that I don't actually have to deal with for once. (/tiny work thing)
My buddy nagarerutenshi seems to have been hoping for a clearer look on the Kindred of the East setting then I provided, (or maybe Exalted, which I'll likely get to in the future) which is totally fair, since the setting is typically the more interesting of the two when it comes to it and mechanics. Of course, asking about the setting of Kindred of the East is a lot like asking someone what Asia is like. You might get a brief about the really influential economies, you can't avoid talking about China and Japan, and you'll probably get a generalization about family honor or something. You can get away with a bit more because even if it's based on real, modern nations with real cultures, you're still dealing with mind-bending revenants, magicians, and wolf-people among others. Locationally, you just have to assume that the setting is the region, and is as accurate as the research as the ST and players are willing to do.
Really, though, most of the relevant information on our revenant pals to the east can be found from a quick search on wikipedia. The real issue, since it's my journal, is my opinion on the vampire related setting in general. Because it lumps so much territory in all at once, I was initially pretty leery of the possible racism-through-exoticism issue which eventually I considered to be a little much. It's true that eastern vampires are a seperate breed from western ones (they're more akin to revenants, really), and there's a lot of in-game misinformation thrown around in the 'fluff', but they're neither 'inferior' or 'superior' to the western vampire line, and honestly, Asia is bigger then Europe but recieved much the same treatment. Except that Asia was concentrated on for a full year while the standard lines maintained development for much longer, leading to more in-depth treatment.
The truth is, I really like the setting. It really doesn't feel like a thin layer of new powers over your standard Vampire frame. To dip into mechanics just a bit, the differentiation of power sources derived from the same source (flesh, blood) and the different types of powers was nice. The different creeds (dharmas) which influence your characters development I thought were ok in the core book, but the splats treat them very nicely. The focus on completly different aspects of the world while still tying into the greater plot of the WoD was well done too. In general, I'm a fan of the line. Like standard Vampire, it's not my favorite, but I think I like it more because, honestly, the powers are a little fiddlier. Truthfully though, like Vampire the Masquerade, I've never played a paper and pencil game of KoE. So there's a lot more I could investigate.

I've noticed that the later it becomes, the more confused and neurotic my thinking becomes until it finally trips 6 AM and time spins dayward again. I had decided to use the period of time where nobody else was awake for correspondence and writing, but the products I generate are just too weird for me. The writing is skewed and nonsensical and the letters tend to be long-winded and maudlin. I might put a stop to late night journal posts, too. The jury, folks, is in. I feel shitty in the early AM. No need to telegraph anymore.
Other then being super-tired over the last few days, things have been good. I slept almost all day long on Friday, getting up only for small spurts and finally staying up at around 7:45 PM. I slept until 4:30 again today, so I think I might have been sick. I went to my last role-playing session with my old role-playing group on Saturday, playing an investigating Devil Tiger from Kindred of the East in an OWoD timeline that never got around to the destruction of the earth. Even though I arrived, and played as well as I could, I felt I was pretty clearly off my game as exemplified in how I nodded off about half an hour before the game even began. In fact, if the site wasn't about 5 minutes from my house I would have needed a ride.
Despite all that, I still had fun, and I noticed a few things that I found really interesting in regards to Kindred of the East (KoE) and western vampires in the game line. First of all, every KoE has the equivilent of a 'Path of Whatever Id Do Anyhow', with the exception that following a Dharma isn't particularly easy. (A Path shouldn't be, either.) Second, their powers are way different. Vampire has really straight forward powers. There's no difficulty in determining what Potence does, or Celerity for that matter. And they're all powered off the same substance. KoE have a veritable grab bag of powers, from Yin and Yang Chi to Demon Chi, which is pretty hazardous to even possess in large quantities (no matter how useful it is). Third, one huge thing is that, while there are two different types of Celerity (Yang Mantle 1, Black Wind), there's nothing that maps over to the Fortitude Disipline. In fact, I don't remember being able to find anything that lets you soak Agg at all. So, while Flow Like Blood is a peerless dodging Disipline, when I was exposed to a burning room with no way out, there was no way for me to soak the fire damage.
Plus, the ability to add a single automatic success to every melee roll in a turn is astoundingly good, since you can split yout dice pool down to a single die and get Str+X damage on each one if you want, though I didn't do anything of the sort. If you throw Flow Like Blood in there on a previous turn, you still get to dodge every attack directed at you with a full Dex. + Dodge pool. I explained that to the ST, and he never even bothered to attack someone with a 9-die dicepool against every attack.
brantai and I were talking Exalted again this evening. Since our first few games, we've had a habit of drawing from popular culture to create some of our more memorable characters. The Abyssal (death-tainted Exalts) diplomat we faced up against was named The Thin White Duke, and Brantai's first character was inspired in part by Ziggy Stardust, though we joked that if he were turned by the Deathlords, he would have renamed him The Man Who Sold The World. While we're reserved that name for a future PC Abyssal, we spent a decent amount of time speculating about other musicians we could pirate for concepts. I think I remember claiming Glass and The Machines of God as Alchemical Exalts - character types constructed from the raw materials that had been stranded in the body of a dead primordial god, where a dystopian society has been forged.

I'm in a pretty good mood despite being at work tonight in part, I think, because it's actually quiet here for once instead of having lightning and thunder knocking out every house in several counties. One of the things I'm pumped about in regards to leaving this job besides, well, most everything, is the fact that I love rainstorms, but have come to loath them as apart of this job. There's nothing like having your workload increased exponentially by something you used to enjoy! But actually, I'm totally not here to bitch about work.
I'm here to talk about Exalted.

This is a two parter. The first part is now, and there's a good chance I'll get the second at work. I'll cut them into two once I finish. I just don't want to clog everyone's friend's list like I know I do.
So, roleplaying is a topic tonight. I know people disagree with me, but I've always thought that playing regular mortals matched up against supernatural bugaboos is pretty cool. There's some problems with this, though, because once the big hardcover core books start getting printed, stuff like Mage, Vampire, and Werewolf, the temptation is to start busting these dudes and ladies out as the opposition to our stalwert Guy Whose Primary Weapon is Not Fangs, But Rather, A Maglight'. We'll call him Guy, for short. Between you and I, well, I think Guy's at a disadvantage. Even with bucketloads of experience points, mortals have certain limits that they can't typically overcome. Merits don't let skin soak leathal, guns don't do agg, and you've got only one pool to try to overcome mind-effecting powers, and that last one's a doozy. In some important cases, people without a power stat can't even try to resist. Suck it, mortal world! As much as I love a mortal game, and I do, I don't really see this as a design error. First of all, I really consider characters like Mages, Vampires, and Promethians to be Big Deals. Hard cover splats are basically the kings of the supernatural world. They're leagues more powerful, they've got self-awareness, they're organized, they can create or locate others of their kind, and their powers are diverse. Plus, putting myself in the shoes of a PC, and considering the nature of a mortals game (probably horror, for me) the idea that there's an entire warren for ancient blood-sucking undead is pretty harrowing. Sigh. Anyhow, I have an alarm that goes off every 12 seconds for a problem I already know about. Frankly, I'm baffled at the number of people awake and willing to call in at 3 am. Like, if your whole neighborhood is out, I'm pretty sure I know about it. I can' t concentrate though. I'm going to have to call this off.

...I started to understand vampires a little better. Well, actually, even though I do seem to have a pretty radical addiction at the moment, it's staying up to all hours of the night that really does it.
If you've heard me talk about Vampire, conceptually, then you probably heard my joking assumptions about vampiric life. Considering the astounding mortality rate of vampires in the public sphere, it amazes me that any would ever surface to do anything but feed and maybe watch re-runs of I Love Lucy. It's just too dangerous. On the other hand, after you've lived a few hundred years, it's likely you start to get pretty jaded (One of my favorite scenes in Vampire occured at the masked ball, when people started trading favors - dangerous favors and information - for penny tokens with the promise of a novelty at the end. It absolutely seemed like this is how vampire courts would act. ).
At the same time, night time is incredibly boring. Or at least it certainly can be. Let's assume your vampire is like me and can get up at 4 PM, sunlight be damned. Even if she can walk around in the light, many businesses and agencies close around 5ish, meaning she's only got an hour to access certain places. Most places will be open later though, cafes, department stores, many malls are open into the evening, so after you wake up and shower, you can still hit these places with ease, but if you've got a lot to do, you'll still need to prioritize. Finally you've got your late night cafes, your bars and clubs, and some libraries. I know I'm missing places, but the point is, I'm pretty sure I keep hearing about club-going vampires because clubs are the places that are open late. Unless you want to talk to the same toothy dudes and ladies forever, these are the places you'll want to go to meet (and eat) new people.
Places around here still close pretty friggin' early. Most bars shut up around 2 AM. Even if you don't go to bed when the sun rises and wait until 8 AM, like I do during work days, there's still several hours where, generally, nobodies really around. I feel fairly certain that hanging out at Denny's is going to get old after a while. It kind of makes sense that house parties, informal get-togethers, and cliques become the norm. On the other hand, I'm not sure how solitary vampires feel compelled to be.
What I realized is that summer feels a lot nicer, but winter is probably the kindest to vampires looking to stay up longer. The sun and day creates an unnatural drowsiness, as far as I was always able to tell. But even winter isn't going to provide that many waking hours. Vampires are often going to sleep, as a matter of course, more then 12 hours a day during the summer. Checking outside my window on several occurances, day starts to peek in around 5:00 AM right now, while it starts to look something like night around 9ish. This tells me a few things like, for example, vampires really do need ghouls or mooks if you want to interact with mortal society in any depth. It's just too frustrating otherwise. I have huge advantages over them just in the hour range I'm normally up for work. Two, boredom is really an issue.Even if there arn't a lot of vampires (and it's not like you can't just make more), it's better to find a concentration and hang out together. Being the only vampire in Bumfuck, Nowhere is going to be fantastically dull. When you get a bunch of bored, territorial hunters together, fun ensues.
Anybody have thoughts on vampiric life? I'm just curious as to other people's opinions.

I'm pretty stoked. My ticket is ordered for the 24th, and I should be arriving at Seattle airport at 9:35 pm there. I originally wanted to depart on the 26th, but tickets were ridiculously priced. Those couple of days seem like an issue now, but I probably won't notice the difference overall. My plan is still to quit on the 19th, but depending on how I feel, and how convenient things are, I might leave sooner. Since I'm not under contract, giving forewarning of my intentions to leave is a polite formality it doesn't hurt to abandon. It's not like I've not been screwed by my job before, eh? So, total freedom.
I'm penning my resignation letter. It's so hard! I'm of the opinion that a resignation letter is really a chance to delve into corporate art. The urge to write "While I am leaving the company, I'd like to thank you for your constant generosity as an employer. The raise in pay to a minimum wage hourly equivalent meant a lot to me as a worker, and I'll always treasure the $25 gas gift card I received as my Christmas bonus." is pretty overwhelming. I've been told that I'm the only person people know who will wait a week to leave a job because he's trying to decide just how he wants to quit. I'm not a creature of impulse, people. I play a blue Magic: the Gathering deck.
The one thing I'm going to miss about the area, besides the really great peeps has got to be the gaming. Not only has the Camarilla been really kind to me here, but I've got a really great personal gaming life as well. I kind of have to abandon the OWoD Vampire finale that's been brewing in the area, which is a drag and I was really hoping to get back into Mage in a big way here. The one really big upside is that Covington has a real reason to get back into the action again. As much as I loved him as a character, the reasons for him to stick around were really starting to dwindle because I can really only justify him being in the area for so long. Plus, as Violca's Humanity drops, he becomes increasingly uncomfortable around her. Ironically, it might be noted that his Humanity started off as lower then hers, not that the situation remained there for long. ^_^;
In addition, I'll be updating Atol's myspace more often, checking his mail account more frequently, and the news of his second record should be coming soon. I know I still haven't gotten my CD case to people, so I'll bring it on the 21st, and you might be able to expect me to upload everything to a website soon, depending. It's a lot of additional work and it's just for grins, so it's not really high on my priority list (somewhere around me playing an MMO, actually). I might update tonight if I think of anything clever, but I don't want to write a lot without a reason. Let's just see if anything comes up.

I was talking with some fellow roleplayers as I went to see Narnia the other night, while we waited for the rest of the group to show up. Personally, if I didn't see some value in the organization I would, not being partial to joining formal organizations in the past, simple allow my membership to lapse feeling that I would, hopefully, at least have the friends I've made to show for my time. So, besides the friendships I've made, which I consider to be very important to me, the group has a lot going for it. I've enjoyed my time spent playing games in the Camarilla thus far.
I may have mentioned in the past, though, that not all my friends hold the same view. Besides the fact that they already have gaming groups and a healthy social lives/networks*, one of the things I keep hearing generally revolves around exp. I'm asked how experience is handled and how characters interact (and occasionally about system issues), and I generally inform them that there's an MC system plus a series of long-term characters that have been accumulating experience for a few years. Even my mage character, whos sheet is getting a little dusty in its binder, has a substantial amount of experience sitting on it, and I'm one of the weaker characters in the chronicle.
The amount of exp in the setting is a little hard for the gaming vets to swallow. Now, I'm not really sure it's a bad thing, because honestly, even a tough bugger of a character will go down under a hail of enough bullets/teeth/knives/whatever. Generally, I've seen a lot of that exp go to very reasonable things to flesh out character concepts, which is probably how it should be.
It think it's a perceptual hurdle, though. There are a lot of players who don't distinguish between table top and LARP when it comes to rules, for example, and only a long term role-playing session under an exceptionally generous Storyteller is going to aquire the kind of exp that a Cam larper can expect to see on even a year-old character whose player has moderate MC. The proportions between player characters is totally different, too, because NPCs are harder to field, a lot of the smaller or more peripheral characters (though they should have their chances to shine) are just going to come from newer players.
It's the proportions between newer and older players that create the different play experience when it comes to power, though. Not only is exp granted for MC, but it's also the standard reward for good play, for showing up to events, et al. I don't think I have a problem with it (in a lot of ways, because I haven't seen a lot of negative fallout from this effect, meaning I'm not even sure how profound it is), but it's certainly in the mind of certain savvy prospective members.
So, like I said. I'm not sure if it's a problem, and if it is, what the solution would be. It's just come up a lot when I query people I know about joining, or am asked about the organizations play.
*not the same thing, I know.

Did you know there's a 'good' emoticon, but not a 'bad' one? And on this image set, the good one has a little halo - as if it indicated moral or spiritual goodness. The closest they probably have, then, is 'naughty' which really has kind of a different connotation. They also have flirty, horny, and hot, but hot really just seems to indicate that one's temperature is too high.
I think my favorite is probably horny, because it gets tiny little horns. Like, in addition to being sexually aroused, the icon has also genetically mutated. Let this be a warning to you all.
Right now, I'm feeling tired and hungry, but I'm chiefly feeling pretty mellow on account of nothing happening. I don't hear any of the prelude to terror that is represented by howling winds tonight, so with any luck I'll just end up thinking about political blogs and gaming all night.
